Despite fears of trade wars escalating, the U.S. stock market continues to march higher, as the S&P 500 has now closed higher for five consecutive weeks.

Apple became the first company to exceed a market cap of more than $1 trillion.

Stocks in play during the week included: AAPL +8.9%, PFE +5.55%, TSLA +17.1%, SHOP -11.4%, TSN -9.1%, and BABA -4.5%

January 24, 2017 Market Wrap Up

The markets closed the day relatively strong. The S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrials, Nasdaq, and Russell 2000 all finished green. With that said, the Dow Jones Industrials are less than 100 points from 20k.

Some strong earnings performers included: Alibaba Group (BABA), Du Pont (DD), and Kimberly Clark (KMB)

Some weak earnings performers included: Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and AK Steel (AKS)

The VIX continues to move lower, it closed at 11.07, down nearly 6% on the day.

Now, here is how some of the other closely followed ETFs did on the week: United States Oil Fund (USO) +0.44%, iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT) -0.69%, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) -0.45%.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in CONE Midstream Partners (CNNX), which traded 15.3 times normal option volume. In addition, we saw heavy put buying in LSB Industries Inc (LXU), which traded 10.5 times normal option volume.

August 7, 2016 The Week Ahead

The S&P 500 closed the week higher, holding on to record high levels. Earnings have been rolling out pretty smoothly and on Friday we received a really strong employment number. Sure, a lot of these gains in the market have been on extremely low volume, however; that hasn’t been raised as a concern yet. The economic schedule is light but there are more earnings to look forward too.

The VIX continued to decline during the week, closing on Friday below 12, at 11.39.

Crude oil futures prices gained almost 1% on the week, however; we’re nearly 12% off our one month highs.

Moving on, gold futures prices dropped more than 1% on the week, turning a weekly gain into a loss after Friday’s employment numbers. In addition, T-bond futures prices dropped more than 1.5%, as they fell back from yearly high levels.

As mentioned earlier, earnings season continues to roll. We’ll be hearing from Michael Kors (KORS), Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX), Alibaba (BABA), Yelp (YELP), and Disney (DIS) just to name a few.

May 25, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 continued its climb back to all-time highs; we’re now a little less than 2% off that. Not to mention, 15% higher than our 6-month lows. One could argue that this is all being done on anemic volume, however; fighting the tape can be very costly during times like this.

Stocks in play today: Alibaba Group (BABA) -7.3%, Express (EXPR) -8.4%, Whiting Petroleum (WLL) +14.5%, and Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT) +26%

It was no surprise to see the VIX sell off as hard as it did. Overall, the VIX closed below 14, finishing the day 3.6% lower.

The United States Oil Fund (USO) was up nearly 2% today. In addition, crude oil futures closed at this year’s highs. We’re now nearly 50% off the 3-month lows.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Craft Brew (BREW), which was 69.2 times normal volume. We also saw a ton of bearish bets being placed in Alibaba Group (BABA). Overall, the option action in Alibaba was 5.9 times above the average.

May 5, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 sold off for the third consecutive day, although; we closed nearly unchanged. For the most part, earnings related companies dominated the action today.

With that said, we got positive earnings out of Alibaba (BABA) this morning (+3.3%). In the after hours we got results out of Gopro (GPRO) -11.5%, Endo International (ENDP) -28.4%, and Herbalife (HLF) +14%.

The VIX sold off a little, closing the day at 15.91, a drop of nearly 1%

Crude Oil bounced back a little, snapping a 3-day losing streak and closing the day below $45 per barrel. It gave up a lot of gains in the afternoon, but still managed to end the day positive.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Weatherford International (WFT). In addition, we saw heavy put buying in YY Inc (YY), which saw 10.8 times usual options volume.

December 8, 2015 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 closed lower, now making it four out of five down days. Oil has been dominating headlines as it has hit multi-year lows. In addition, many oil-related stocks were in play today, specifically, MLPs.

Kinder Morgan (KMI) -11%, NGL Energy Partners (NGL) -9%, Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP) +1.7%.

In the after hours, we got news out of Wynn Resorts (WYNN), CEO, Steve Wynn announced that he bought 1 million shares in the open market. The stock is up more than 5%. Also, Yahoo (YHOO) announced that it will not plan to move ahead on the Alibaba (BABA) spinoff. The stock price is up more than 2.5% in extended hours trading.

The VIX took off, closing the day 11% higher at 17.60.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Time Inc (TIME). We also saw massive put buyers in Banco Santander (SAN).
