January 5, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 had its first up day of the new year, however; it’s still down more than 1% from yesterday’s sell off. A really shaky start, which makes tomorrow’s FOMC minutes a potential market changer.

In addition, the Consumer Electronics Show continues tomorrow. Companies are presenting their new products to this huge public forum. A good showing can boost stock prices higher. On the other hand, a poor showing can really drive stock prices lower, as witnessed with FitBit (FIT) today.

Crude oil futures prices have not faired better, they’re down about 3% over the first two trading days of the year.

September 24, 2015 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 finished the day lower, down over 0.5%, however; we got a big bounce off the lows, a range of about 30 points. The market got very weak after Caterpillar Inc (CAT) dropped their sales outlook and referenced that it could cut over 10,000 jobs. Of course, this is one of those companies that market participants use as a gauge of economic strength. Naturally, disappointing statements would be reflected in the overall market.

The VIX was up over 6%, closing at 23.457. For now, it appears that 20 might be a new base level.

August 4, 2015 Market Wrap Up

August 4, 2015 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 closed lower for the third straight trading session. However, as mentioned yesterday, we’re not too far off the yearly highs.

A lot of the sell-off can be attributed to the sharp decline in Apple shares, dropping more than 3%, more than six points off the 200-day moving average. On the bright side, Netflix hit 52-week highs, after announcing a date on when it will enter Japan and catching a few price target raises.

Interestingly, the Chinese market rebounded last night. Which was good enough to see commodity prices rebound slightly.

The VIX saw a slight pop, closing the day at 13, a move of 3.5%.

On the options front, we saw bullish call buying in Rite Aid Corp (RAD). We also saw bearish option activity in Cirrus Logic Inc (CRUS).
