February 22, 2017 The Week Ahead

The markets closed mixed today on lower than expected volume. For the most part, we’ve been trending higher with no real hiccup to note of. That said, even the FOMC minutes were a non-event today. The VIX is still trading below 12, as it closed at 11.74.

Strong earnings performers included: Garmin (GRMN), Mobileye (MBLY), and Tesla (TSLA)

Weak earnings performers included: L Brands (LB), Hollyfrontier (HFC), and Terex (TEX)

ETF Performers: United States Oil Fund (USO) -1.56%, iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT) +0.17%, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) +0.14%.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Liberty Interactive (QVCA), which traded 289 times normal option volume. In addition, we saw heavy put buying in Macquarie Infrastructure Company (MIC), which traded 2.3 times normal option volume.

July 14, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 continues to break records as we continue to see “risk on” enter the market. Not only that, but treasuries and gold have been selling off, something we weren’t seeing last week. Despite the record close in the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrials, volume was extremely anemic today.

Stocks in play today include: Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) +6.29%, Williams Companies (WMB) +6%, and Cypress Semiconductors (CY) +3.5%

The VIX came in today, and is now trading below 13, at 12.82.

Crude oil futures gained more than 1.5% today, however; it’s been relatively flat this week.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in HollyFrontier (HFC), which traded 7.6 times normal volume. We also saw a ton of bearish bets being placed in Eagle Materials (EXP) which traded 2.5 times usual volume.

Here’s what’s on tap for tomorrow:

Key Economic Data:
15 July 2016- Consumer Price Index 8:30 AM ET, Retail Sales 8:30 ET, Industrial Production 9:15 AM ET

Key Earnings:

June 1, 2016 Market Wrap Up

The S&P 500 started the new month on a positive note, however; volume was well below the average. With that said, it’s not the greatest sign, when we’re moving towards all-time highs without any follow through in volume.

Stocks in play today: Nike (NKE) -.5%, Energy Transfer Equity (ETE) +8%, Ocean Power Technologies (OPTT) +285%, Hollyfrontier (HFC) +5%

Given the weak volume and lack of downward follow through pressure…the VIX didn’t do too much, closing at 14.20.

The United States Oil Fund (USO) was down less than .25% today. Crude oil futures have been wrestling trying to break $50 per barrel. Now, they’ve been able to get their intraday, but have yet to hold on to it. Tomorrow marks an OPEC meeting as well as the EIA petroleum report.

On the options front, we saw large call buying activity in Westlake Chemical Corp (WLK), which traded 16.9 times normal volume. We also saw a ton of bearish bets being placed in Nike (NKE), which traded 3.9 times usual volume.
